本书是为长学制临床外科教学编写的教材。自1998年我校(原北京医科大学)增设7年制临床医学专业以来，已连续招生十四届。参与历年教学的教师们通过课程改革与教学实践深感为了巩固教改成果，进一步提高教学质量和加强校际交流，应为长学制教学编写一本新教材的紧迫性与必要性。为此，由我校各附属医院和临床教学医院的资深教师和中青年骨干教师根据教育部对长学制专业人才培养的要求，参照国外经典教材及其他外科专业书籍，结合教师们十几年教学实践经验的积累及临床教学改革的效果编写了本教材。编写中除了强调要加强基础理论知识，突出宽口径、广适应性的原则外，还加强了理论与实践相结合的要求。本书具有以下特色：
1.尝试双语编写，强化外语学习本书以我校《人体生理学》为样本，尝试在教材中加强英语关键词的教学，使同学通过学习专业内容扩大专业英语词汇，有利于提高英语文献的阅读能力。
2.突破传统教材的模式，提倡内容更新，开拓思路本教材除介绍一般教材对疾病的概念、发病机制、临床表现、诊断、治疗原则外，还选择性地介绍了一些极有发展前景的新概念、新理论或短时间内极可能推广使用的新疗法和新技术以及一些国内尚在酝酿、国际已经使用的新理念或新法规等，启发学生的创新性思维，为他们毕业后在新环境下的工作做好适应性的准备，也有利于培养学生对新事物的敏感性及对新问题探索与研究的兴趣。此外，教材中还包括了一些只供小组讨论和个人自学的内容，有助于学生后期的科研选题。
3.教材配有光碟请外籍教师读讲每章中的关键名词及其注解内容，帮助学生自学专业外语，提高学生听、读、说、写专业外语的能力。 由于本书为初次编写，作者人数极多，对上述编写要求的认识与理解不同，因此各章内容的深度、广度和英语词汇量的选择范围均可能存在繁简程度不一，比例不平衡的问题，加上成书仓促和我们的经验与水平有限，不足与错误之处在所难免，还有待今后在实践中不断改进和完善。我们诚邀各界同行给予批评指正。
